Scaling & Root Planing
During its early stages, gum disease can be easily managed with a deep cleaning, which consists of two steps: scaling and root planing. With scaling, we remove the built-up tartar that is below the gum line, and then we smooth the enamel with root planing. This kickstarts the healing process and helps the gums reattach to the teeth in a way that will make them less likely to accumulate tartar and bacteria in the future.
Antibiotic Treatment
Gum disease bacteria likes to hide deep down in gum pockets, making it very hard to reach. Scaling and root planing can take care of most of it, and antibiotic treatment is able to deal with the rest. Using a topical solution or prescription-strength rinse (or both), we can eliminate an ongoing infection, soothe tender gums, and help you stay healthy between appointments.
Gum Grafts
In places where the gums have receded and left the roots of the teeth exposed, we can restore them with a gum graft. This involves taking a small bit of a patient’s tissue (usually from the roof of the mouth) and using it to cover the teeth. Our team’s experience and use of technology make this process very straightforward, precise, and comfortable so that your time in the chair is minimal and recovery is fast.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is gum disease?
Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is an infection of the tissues that surround and support the teeth. It begins with gingivitis, characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums, and can progress to periodontitis, which involves the destruction of the bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place. Untreated gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults.
What are the signs of gum disease?
Common signs include gums that bleed when brushing or flossing, persistent bad breath, red or swollen gums, gums that have pulled away from the teeth (recession), tooth sensitivity, loose or shifting teeth, and changes in how your bite feels. Some forms of gum disease cause little pain in the early stages, making regular dental exams essential for early detection.
What causes gum disease?
The primary cause of gum disease is the accumulation of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, along and below the gumline. Risk factors that can increase susceptibility include smoking, diabetes, hormonal changes, certain medications, genetic predisposition, and poor oral hygiene. Individuals with certain systemic health conditions may be at higher risk for developing or worsening gum disease.
Can gum disease be reversed?
Gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease, is reversible with proper professional treatment and consistent home care. More advanced periodontitis cannot be fully reversed, but it can be controlled and managed effectively to prevent further progression and tooth loss. Ongoing periodontal maintenance appointments are a key part of keeping the disease stable after treatment.
Is gum disease linked to other health conditions?
Research has established associations between periodontal disease and a number of systemic conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory disease, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. While the relationship is not fully understood in every case, maintaining healthy gums is considered an important component of overall health. The American Academy of Periodontology and other organizations continue to study these connections.
