Restorations In Naples

Sealants in Naples, FL

Cavities do not announce themselves before they arrive. They develop quietly in the deep grooves and pits of back teeth where toothbrush bristles cannot fully reach, and by the time they become visible or symptomatic, the damage is already done. For patients in Naples looking for a straightforward way to stay ahead of tooth decay, dental sealants offer one of the most effective and least invasive preventive tools available in modern dentistry.

At Advanced Prosthodontics and Implants Esthetics, dental sealants are part of our preventive dentistry services for Naples patients who want to protect their teeth from cavities before they require more involved treatment. Led by Dr. Randold Binns, a surgical prosthodontist trained through Nova Southeastern University School of Dental Medicine and the University of Illinois at Chicago, our practice approaches preventive care with the same attention to detail and long-term thinking that defines our restorative and specialty work. Keeping healthy teeth healthy is always the most effective form of dental care.

What Dental Sealants Are and How They Work

A dental sealant is a thin, protective coating applied directly to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, primarily the molars and premolars. These surfaces are covered in deep grooves and fissures that trap food particles and bacteria, making them highly susceptible to decay even with consistent brushing and flossing. A sealant flows into those grooves and bonds to the tooth, creating a smooth, sealed surface that blocks out bacteria and debris before they can begin the process of cavity formation.

The application is quick, painless, and requires no drilling or removal of tooth structure. The tooth is cleaned, a bonding agent is applied, and the sealant material is painted onto the surface and hardened with a curing light. The entire process for a single tooth takes only a few minutes, and patients can eat and drink normally immediately afterward.

The Evidence Behind Sealants

The protective value of dental sealants is well supported by research. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, dental sealants prevent 80% of cavities over two years in the back teeth, where nine in ten cavities occur, and continue to protect against 50% of cavities for up to four years. Despite this effectiveness, less than half of children and adolescents in the United States currently have sealants on their permanent teeth, making it one of the most underutilized preventive interventions in dentistry.

That gap matters because cavities in sealed teeth are far less common than cavities in unsealed teeth. Children without sealants experience nearly three times as many cavities in their permanent first molars as those who have them, and untreated decay in permanent teeth leads to more complex and costly restorative needs down the line.

Who Benefits from Dental Sealants

Sealants are most commonly associated with children, but they are not exclusively a pediatric treatment. The following groups benefit from sealant application:

  • Children and adolescents: Sealants are most effective when placed shortly after permanent molars erupt, typically around ages 6 and 12, giving the teeth maximum protection during the years when cavity risk is highest
  • Adults with deep grooves: Many adults have back tooth anatomy that makes them persistently vulnerable to decay, even with excellent home care, and sealants provide the same protective barrier regardless of age
  • Patients with existing restorations: Patients who have had white fillings or other restorative work on their back teeth may benefit from sealants on adjacent unsealed surfaces to reduce the risk of additional decay

Sealants are not appropriate for teeth that already have decay present or teeth with existing fillings on the chewing surface. During your evaluation, we assess each tooth individually to determine which surfaces are good candidates for sealing.

Sealants as Part of a Broader Preventive Strategy

Sealants work best as one element of a comprehensive approach to oral health. Consistent brushing, flossing, regular professional cleanings, and fluoride application all contribute to keeping decay at bay. For patients who are prone to cavities despite good habits, sealants address the structural vulnerability of deep grooves that hygiene alone cannot fully protect. For patients who have already invested in prosthodontic work, including dental crowns, implants, or full-mouth restorations, protecting adjacent natural teeth through preventive measures like sealants helps preserve the integrity of the surrounding dentition and reduce the need for future intervention.

Sealants typically last several years before they need to be evaluated for reapplication. We check existing sealants at each hygiene visit and recommend retreatment when wear or chipping reduces their protective coverage.
