Guided Biofilm Therapy was developed by EMS, a Swiss dental technology company known for its research into oral hygiene. The protocol focuses on finding and removing biofilm before it can lead to cavities, gingivitis, or periodontitis. At our Naples office, we use the AIRFLOW Prophylaxis Master by EMS, a device built specifically for this method.
Biofilm forms constantly on your teeth and gums, even with regular brushing at home. Traditional cleanings tend to focus on the calculus, or tartar, that biofilm eventually hardens into. GBT instead identifies and removes the biofilm itself, addressing the source of gum disease and tooth decay before it has a chance to cause lasting harm.
The Guided Biofilm Therapy Protocol at Our Naples Office
Our team follows an eight step protocol for every GBT appointment, and each step builds on the one before it to give you a thorough, gentle cleaning. Here is what you can expect during your visit.
- Assess: We complete a full clinical exam, including pocket depth measurements and a check for any bleeding around the gums.
- Disclose: A plaque disclosing agent is applied to your teeth, staining new biofilm pink and older, more established biofilm blue.
- Motivate: We walk you through what we found and talk about any home care habits that could help.
- AIRFLOW: A warm, gentle spray of air, water, and fine erythritol powder lifts away the disclosed biofilm, stains, and soft buildup.
- PERIOFLOW: This step reaches biofilm hiding below the gumline and around dental implants, which is especially helpful for preventing gum and implant related problems.
- PIEZON PS: Any remaining hardened calculus is removed comfortably using an ultrasonic scaler.
- Check: We apply the disclosing agent again to confirm every bit of biofilm has been cleared.
- Recall: We schedule your next visit based on your individual risk factors.
